What is a drum tap?

Drum taps screw into a drum tightly to avoid leaks or spills. Each one has a spout, which usually points downward, and can be turned on or off like a household tap. These taps allow the user to decant with extreme accuracy. Most drum taps enable nearly all of the fluid to be drained from the drum, so it never has to be rolled or tipped – a practice which can easily cause accidents.

What types of drainage taps does DENIOS UK offer?

When choosing a drum tap, it is important to consider the diameter of the tap to ensure it will match the aperture on your drum. As part of our broad selection, we offer a Dispensing Tap For Plastic Containers to fit a 13mm drum opening. This tap is highly resistant to acidic substances and gives a throughflow capacity of 25 litres per minute. Plastic barrel taps provide a fast and clean method of extracting fluids without excessive gurgling or bubbling.

How do you choose the right material for your container and drum tap?

In order to choose the right tap for your products, find out about the compatibility of your chemical product and the material of the canister and drum tap.

You can find more information in the safety data sheet (SDS) of your liquid to be filled. As a rule of thumb, we recommend that you choose the tap in the material of the original canister in which your chemical was delivered (e.g. a plastic tap for a plastic canister).

Please note that when processing your products, the chemical composition may change and thus, for example, the corrosiveness of the product. The plastic tap is the most common.

It should also be taken into account whether the plastic or stainless steel tap should be certified for the use of foodstuffs or very pure products.

Plastic, brass, aluminium, steel, stainless steel taps for drums

Taps for drums, canisters or 1000 litre tanks facilitate the filling and decanting of hazardous liquids. In order to guarantee the tightness of the tap to secure your filling operations, here are the criteria to take into account:

  • When choosing your drum tap, you should not only consider the thread dimensions and the type of opening of the tap, but also the material of the tap.

  • The material of the tap must be resistant to the product to be filled in order to avoid dangerous and polluting leaks.

  • DENIOS offers you several materials: plastic, brass, stainless steel, cast iron or aluminium taps as well as steel taps.

Metal drum taps

Formulated from high-quality materials and resistant to corrosion, our High Grade Steel Tap is a good choice in facilities where harmful chemicals are housed. This tap features an adjustable position, allowing the user to rotate and change the spout direction. It is ideal for leak-proof dispensing of flammable liquids, as it features an internal flame arrester to prevent any flash back of flames into the drum. It is also self-closing and provides a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) seal for more effective chemical resistance.

Cast iron barrel taps are typically used to drain thick, slow-flowing fluids that are still viscous. A brass locking plate makes these taps extremely durable, but they do need to be shut off manually. Completed by a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) seal, these taps can withstand more aggressive liquids and environments.

Brass taps are highly resistant to corrosion and won’t suffer from rust. Unlike metals containing iron, these will not generate a spark on impact. This makes our Brass Safety Valve ideal for pouring petrol or for use as an oil drum tap. It is fitted with an NBR seal for added resistance to hydrocarbon fuel and petroleum base oils.

Drum tooling

In some industries, it is necessary to store drums horizontally, which can make them more difficult to empty completely. Our drum tools are made from rust-free stainless steel, bronze, plastic and cast iron.

The drum opener tool allows the user to drain the contents of a drum thoroughly. Once the drum is clear, the lid can be screwed back into position immediately, lowering the risk of leaks.

Environmentally-friendly options

Polyethylene drum taps are designed for non-flammable corrosive liquids. These taps can be opened by giving the handle a half-turn and must be closed manually. Our PE Drum Tap can be used to drain a range of corrosive chemicals and boasts a quick, efficient outflow. For example, a 205-litre drum can be emptied in around three minutes using this tap. The union nut is made from strong, lightweight Polypropylene (PP), while the seal is manufactured from expanded polyethylene (EPE), a non-absorbent material. The rest of the tap, including the locking lever, is finished in polyethylene (PE), making our plastic drum taps almost completely recyclable.

Different types of tap openings for easy filling

You have the choice between push or turn levers. For precision dosing, prefer taps with push levers to constantly control the flow of your products. In order to keep both hands free when filling, taps with a turning lever are the right solution.

Are there containers with integrated taps?

If you need to dose small quantities on a regular basis, we recommend the use of safety cans, which allow safe storage and handling of your chemicals. They can be equipped with a dosing tap, a long or short spout, a pump or a classic cap. Our storage and measuring containers include drums with plastic taps.

To protect your users when liquids are not in use, consider providing suitable safety cabinets, for example with fire protection for the storage of flammable liquids.
