Battery Collecting Boxes

Battery collecting boxes

As work and businesses have become more technologically driven, so the need for a wide range of batteries to power devices in the workplace has grown. Also, the more demand placed on these batteries, the greater the turnover, leaving many businesses with a quantity of used batteries to dispose of.

Designated containers should be used when collecting used batteries and fluorescent tubes. At DENIOS you will find a broad product portfolio of battery collectors and fluorescent tube collectors.

Battery Directive

Batteries can and should be recycled and certainly should never be removed along with normal waste products. The European Community (EC) Directive 2006/66/EC is known as The Battery Directive because of how it applies to the treating and recycling of batteries and accumulators. Since its implementation, businesses have been required to store used batteries on site so that they can be collected for recycling at a later date.

Separate storage

Batteries should be stored separately from other items in an appropriate container to reduce the risk of corrosive damage due to leaks and even the possibility of fire. A Used Battery Container with a generous 670-litre capacity is an ideal solution to this problem, particularly for a firm with a high turnover of batteries and/or infrequent collections. The container comes in sturdy, shock-resistant polypropylene and meets all ADR and RID regulations for small containers while including extra stiffeners for use as a battery box.

Work safety

Although used batteries are unlikely to catch fire, this has unfortunately been known to happen, especially in the case of 9v or lithium batteries that have been incorrectly stored. It is possible for the two terminals to short circuit and overheat, leading to combustion. For this reason, battery storage has to be considered as a health and safety issue as well as a practical and environmental measure.

Follow these key points for safe battery storage:

  • Store batteries according to the manufacturers' instructions
  • Keep away from combustible materials
  • Store away from direct sunlight, in a well-ventilated area
  • Tape over terminals to prevent short circuits
  • Do not allow batteries to be crushed, punctured, or otherwise damaged

At DENIOS UK, we have a selection of battery collection boxes to suit different workplace needs and requirements. If batteries are regularly collected for recycling, then a 9-litre Used Battery Collection Box in grey plastic could be the perfect solution for your needs. This sturdy container has a covered lid with catches and security seals that includes two separate openings, one for batteries and one for button cells. A 20-litre version is also available.

Fluorescent Tubes

Another common item in workplaces and warehouses that requires careful storage and disposal is the humble fluorescent lighting tube. Although highly efficient and easy to install, used fluorescent tubes are classified as hazardous waste, as they contain mercury, a toxic metal that can be highly poisonous when burnt, ingested, or allowed to enter the water supply.

For this reason, used fluorescent tubes cannot be disposed of with normal waste or added to general recycling, but have to be carefully stored before collection by a specialist fluorescent tube recycling service. DENIOS UK supplies a range of Transportation Boxes For Fluorescent Tubes in several different sizes that can be used for storage or internal transport. Made of light but sturdy polyethylene, the boxes come with a handle and cover as well as the option of a bracket to allow the Transportation Box to be attached to a workbench or forklift.

These boxes can be used for storing and transporting new tubes before use, as well as for taking used tubes to await recycling, and are the best way to make sure that your tubes do not become damaged. It is important to take great care with fluorescent tubes even when they have reached the end of their lifespan. A damaged tube can release mercury into the air, which can be highly toxic even in minuscule quantities.
