Storage of various hazardous substances for BASF in Ludwigshafen

BASF sets the standards for the safe storage of various hazardous substances at its main site in Ludwigshafen.

The challenge and task

This global company has great experience handling hazardous substances and demands a knowledge of responsibilities and maximum safety when handling and storing such substances. In the event of a fire, a steel container system for example could seriously hinder fire alarm signalling and the excellent work of the works fire brigade.

The aim for the new container system was obvious: improved safety. The BASF engineers worked closely with the operators, the works fire brigade and the responsible specialists. With the involvement of the authorities and engineers from DENIOS a decision on a sustainable, long lasting storage concept was made.

The challenges included storing a wide variety of storage classes in separate fire areas in a limited space .

Central to the planning work were: fire protection, fire notification, extinguishing technology, water protection, temperature control, explosion protection, media resistance of the containment areas and combined storage prohibitions.

The solution

The solution to this challenge was a DENIOS F90 fire-rated storage container. The available area of approx. 20 x 22 meters was split into 9 separate F90 fire areas. The DENIOS systems were adapted to meet the BASF requirements.

Each fire area was fitted with the required equipment. In addition to the required separate extinguishing systems, each individual area was equipped with the same fittings. This ensured maximum safety.

Result and customer benefits

Close cooperation between BASF SE and DENIOS ensured a high-quality, economic solution was developed which met all the requirements from BASF.
